Grappling guns are items that let you maneuver more easily around the terrain.

Obtaining

To obtain it, the player must unlock it in the technology menu. It can only be unlocked using Ancient Technology Points. After unlocking it, it can be crafted at a workbench or assembly line, depending on the type.

Usage

A grappling gun must be equipped as weapon before it can be used. When selected, it will show a crosshair. Left clicking will activate the gun: It will shoot a rope towards where you're aiming. If it hits world terrain, it will stick to it and pull you towards it. It cannot stick to man-made objects (excluding buildings), Pals, minerals, or terrain that is under water. You can cancel the grappler's pulling mechanic by rolling (default: "Ctrl").

Grappling guns have a cool-down before they can be used again. This cooldown only activates once it successfully stuck to the ground. They also have a seperate cooldown for each grappler, allowing multiple uses.

Grappling Guns can be used while weighed down. This lets you transport heavy loads even when you can't walk anymore.

It cannot be used while gliding, but it can be used while falling. Since the rope often goes slower than your vertical falling velocity, you cannot aim it at the ground to break high fall damage[source: I couldn't get it to work]. You can, however, aim it at nearby walls, if you know where to aim. You can also use it while mounted, but this will cause you to dismount your Pal. You must aim (hold right-click) to use it, though, because otherwise the game will try to use the Pal's attack instead of your gun.

If used while crouched, the player will still be crouched after grappling.

Types of grappling guns

Grappling guns have different spherical ranges. The current unit used to show the range is the Wooden Structure Set's Wooden Foundation.

Tips

Grapple Gliding: Using a grapple gun to gain speed before opening a glider to maintain speed.

  • Flat Ground/Slight descent- Use the grapple gun as far away from you as possible to build up speed. Right before you hit the ground cancel the grapple and open a glider. For testing use about 8 foundations lengths as a runway.
  • Wall/Higher surface- Aim at the corner of a wall/high surface and cancel after gaining some speed, but before hitting the wall. Directing yourself away from the wall to prevent collision will let you glide through the air at high speeds.
    • A good testing environment is building the following with the Wooden Structure Set: A foundation, two walls on top of each other, and a roof. Standing some distance away and aiming at the bottom of the roof will make sure you don't have any obstacles after gripping. Then, cancel before getting close to the roof and activate your glider.
  • Now enjoy gliding through the air faster than a Jetragon[verify].

Grapple-vator (Grapple Elevator):

  • Build a foundation with a wall. Build as high as you desire the elevator to go. Stand on the foundation and aim at the bottom edge of the wall. The lift animation will clip characters arm through the wall and you will start to rise up. Once the top of the wall reached you can cancel the grapple while walking forward to exit the Grapple-vator.
  • For multiple floors you will need multiple grapple-vators.
  • Not responsible for any cheese grating of face.

Known Bugs

  • While the Grappling Gun is stored on ones back, the model shown is of the Pistol, not the Grappling Gun. - Xbox Edition

History

  • 0.3.1.0
    • Changed the grappling gun behaviour to make it less likely to get stuck.
    • Tweaked the grappling guns so that their cooldown is reduced to 1 second when targeting the ground directly in front of yourself, allowing for much easier movement while over-encumbered.
  • 0.1.2.0
    • Introduced.
