Cooling

Cooling is one of the Work Suitability skills a Pal can have. It allows Pals to regulate temperature and preserve food by operating cooling-related facilities within a base.

Cooling Mechanics

When assigned to a Cooler Box or Refrigerator, a Pal’s Cooling level extends the spoilage timer of stored food items. Both structures function identically in terms of food preservation; the Refrigerator only provides increased storage capacity and does not further extend expiration time.

Neither the Cooler Box nor the Refrigerator drains a Pal’s Sanity. In fact, Pals regain Sanity while working at these structures. By contrast, the Cooler does drain Sanity while in use.

Work Speed bonuses increase the effectiveness of Cooling when operating a Cooler Box or Refrigerator, but have no effect on the Cooler.

Food Expiration Duration

Food preservation duration starts at 200 minutes at Level 1 Cooling, with each additional level adding 200 minutes:

  • Level 1: 200 minutes
  • Level 2: 400 minutes
  • Level 3: 600 minutes
  • Level 4: 800 minutes
  • Level 5: 1000 minutes*

With work-related passives such as Artisan, Serious, Lucky, and Work Slave, these durations increase to:

  • 420 / 860 / 1280 / 1720 / 2140 minutes

*Level 5 Cooling is only available to  Frostallion and  Bastigor through the Pal Condenser.

Associated Facilities

Values

Each food item has its own base spoilage time. Cooling increases this duration by applying a flat multiplier based on the Pal’s Cooling level.

When a Cooling Pal stops working (for example, to take a break), the spoilage timer resets to the extended value once they resume work. Because of this behavior, the specific Pal used is largely irrelevant as long as it has Cooling and remains assigned consistently.

Cooling Level 1 2 3 4 5
Time Multiplier 10× 20× 30× 40× 50×
Added Time (min) 20 40 60 80 100

Cooler Mechanics

The Cooler lowers the temperature in a fixed area with an effective radius of approximately 15 meters. This effect does not stack—placing multiple Coolers in the same area does not further reduce temperature, increase radius, or provide additional benefits.

Cooling skill level does not affect the Cooler’s temperature reduction, radius, or performance in any way.

These same rules apply to the Egg Incubator. Only one Cooler will affect an Incubator, and Cooling level, placement distance, or multiple Coolers provide no additional benefit.

Usage Notes

Because food spoilage timers can be reset by sorting storage containers, extremely high Cooling levels are often unnecessary. Even Level 1 Cooling provides more than three hours of preservation, which is sufficient for most absences from a base.

It is more important to ensure the Pal remains assigned to the container consistently. Using a Monitoring Stand to lock the Pal to a specific Cooler Box or Refrigerator prevents it from abandoning its post. Nocturnal Pals such as  Vanwyrm Cryst are particularly effective, as they continue working overnight without requiring additional traits.
