Black Marketeer

Black Marketeers are vendors similar to Pal Merchants, except that they tend to have far-rarer Pals available for sale. They carry a Unknown icon.png  Fat Gatling Gun and will drop a Gold Key icon.png  Gold Key when defeated.

The Black Marketeer or Black Market Merchant is an NPC who buys and sells Pals in exchange for Gold Coins, much like a standard Pal Merchant. Unlike his more lawful counterpart, though, the Black Marketeer has no regard for the rules and regulations on selling Pals, and thus can be found selling rare and high-value Pals that you wouldn't see most other merchants selling (such as those found only in the Wildlife Sanctuaries). Because of this, Black Marketeers are a great way to get ahold of powerful Pals that are generally hard to find out in the open...if you can find where they're hiding.

Appearance

Unlike all the other merchants in the game (whom are clearly palette swaps of the same model), the Black Marketeer has a distinct appearance that differs drastically from his fellow shopkeepers. He takes the form of a large, heavyset man who wears a black cloak over his standard uniform. His hood covers the top half of his face, though his beady yellow eyes still shine through the shadow created by the hood. He sports sickly grey skin and a huge, toothy grin, and he holds an old-fashioned smoking pipe in between his teeth.

Locations

Black Marketeer locations are much more out-of-the-way than Pal Merchants. Like other merchants, Black Marketeers generally appear in random spots on the map; but due to the seedy nature of their services, Black Marketeers are much more elusive and generally harder to find than any other type of merchant. However, there are a select few locations where you'll always find a Black Marketeer camping out. These locations include abandoned mineshafts which feature long, winding tunnels that lead to a room containing a Black Marketeer, along with a slew of cages, guillotines, and other items scattered all over the room. A source of light may be recommended regardless of the time of day, as due to occasional lighting problems, the mineshafts may be rendered pitch-black or fully illuminated (its not certain which one is intended). Some of these locations are as follows:

  • A short way below the Desolate Church Fast Travel point, to the west and hidden underneath a cliff.
  • To the west of the PIDF Tower entrance, wedged inside a canyon within the Desiccated Desert
  • Alongside the northern outside wall of Duneshelter

Dialogue

Black Marketeers will greet you by saying:

"I trade in any kind of Pal... Whether it’s stolen Pals, or even prohibited types... Take a look..."

You can then trade with them, or leave:

"Buy contraband"
"Sell contraband"
"Leave"
"Heheheh, looks like meat's on the menu today..."

Trivia

  • Just like any other human NPC, Black Marketeers can be captured with Pal Spheres and brought back to your base, where they will always be available for you to buy from and sell to them at your leisure.
    • Attacking or attempting to capture him will result in him fighting back by whipping a minigun out of hammerspace and shooting the player with it.
